Overview The Department of History offers programs leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in History. The M.A. degree has been awarded since the 1930s; the Ph.D. program was established in 1967. On average the Department awards six to eight M.A. degrees each year and one to three Ph.D. degrees. Admission to these programs is based upon recommendations of the Graduate Studies Committee to the head of the department. The M.A. and Ph.D. programs train students for careers that blend teaching and research. Recent graduates have secured positions in four-year colleges, community colleges, and governmental and cultural institutions. Each year the Department of History admits approximately fifteen students into the M.A. and Ph.D. programs. Roughly half of these students are awarded multi-year funding as Teaching Assistants or Associates.
